5 Tips For Perfect Facial Hair Removal

We all know how it feels to have unwanted facial hair. For some of us, it means a seriously negative impact on our self-esteem. At a basic level, having a great eyebrow shape or a polished look around the hairline gives a real boost. In extremes, sufferers of unwanted hair on the lip, brow, chin or cheeks can find everyday socialising difficult. Getting the right treatment - for people of all genders - to remove hair and slow down regrowth is so important.

At Harley, we have years of experience in facial hair removal. We have fantastic Hot Wax and Film Wax that give the perfect finish for all facial waxing treatments. All our products are natural, avoiding nasty chemicals that can have a horrible impact on sensitive skin.

Here is a guide to our best advice when it comes to getting the most from your facial waxing. Remember, you can contact us if you want to ask any questions!

1. Choose the right wax

Right away, we should say we firmly believe that an experienced therapist is the best person to do a facial wax treatment. Eyebrow waxing is an art and it can transform your face! If handled incorrectly, facial hair removal of all kinds can be painful, difficult and lead to mistakes. In contrast, a trained therapist knows exactly how to minimise risks and deliver a perfect finish.

Firstly, you need to understand your wax options. We are proud to offer two great facial hair removal options: a traditional hot wax and a unique film wax. Both are great for sensitive areas and will lift hairs as short as 1mm.

Hot wax is a favourite amongst therapists because we generally use it for smaller coverage areas. In a nutshell, it’s great for details! If you already love our film wax, it works in the same way as hot wax. It’s just more of an all rounder! You can learn more about hot wax and film wax in our blog.

2. Prepare the skin

Next, you need to prepare the skin for waxing. It’s essential with either wax options to treat the skin with our Pre-Waxing Oil. The oil ensures that the wax shrink-wraps around the hair, not the skin. Pre-wax oil reduces redness and irritation, whilst limiting the risk of ingrown hairs.

Here’s another important tip! You absolutely must not combine facial waxing with a day of spa treatments. Any fragrances, oils, or chemicals from facial products can leave a residue that can interfere with the waxing treatment. We know there is going to be a little redness for a few hours after the treatment. However, adding face masks, scrubs or peels can lead to some serious longer-lasting irritation.

Our best advice is to get a dedicated facial hair removal waxing appointment and focus on nothing else!

3. Choose your eyebrow shape

Do you want perfect brows? If so, our top tip is this: avoid trends and let your face shape decide! Everyone wants natural, full, fluffy eyebrows at the moment and that’s great. However, what matters most is getting the shape right. Read our guide for perfect brows for every face shape, to help you decide!

4. Take care when waxing beard, upper lip, nose and ears

Facial hair removal isn’t just about getting your eyebrows looking great. So many of us have problem hair on the face. It can be caused by PCOS or hormonal imbalance. Those of us with darker hair find it shows up where we don’t want it. Trans people want their face to reflect their identity and unwanted hair is a real burden.

Waxing isn’t great for removing full beards, but for controlling cheek, chin, sideburns and moustache hair growth it’s ideal. Because the entire hair is removed, regrowth is far slower than with shaving. It also ensures hair grows back thinner - ignore anyone who tells you the opposite!

Hair at the back of the nostril and inside the ear canal is essential for health reasons. Take care to only remove exterior hair around the ears and only wax the longer, external lower nostril hairs.

5. Use a post-wax care treatment

Harley After Care Oil is the best way to round off a treatment: limiting redness and avoiding ingrown hairs. Its soothing lavender formula also helps ensure a smooth finish.

Keep away from other moisturisers, cleansers and soaps for the rest of the day. You can use some Aloe Soothing Gel from the fridge if the redness or pain persists. If you are concerned at all after your treatment then call your therapist right away.
