No matter the season, people around the world visit salons for a variety of intimate waxing procedures.
What exactly is intimate waxing?
In a nutshell, it involves removing some or all hair from the pubic area.
This beauty and personal care guide to intimate waxing covers the most coveted bikini wax trends. It also offers some top tips on how to manage your bikini area post-wax.
The Intimate Waxing Styles
Whether you’re thinking about an intimate wax for the first time or you are interested in something a little more daring, it’s best to leave the waxing up to the experts – because let’s face it – we all have that one friend with a horror DIY intimate waxing story.
When it comes to removing hair down there, it’s easy to get confused with all the intimate waxing styles. Let’s not even mention the extra industry terminology as well.
You’ve probably heard of the intimate waxing terms the ‘Classic’, the ‘Brazilian’, and the ‘Hollywood’. But do you understand what they are, how they are different, and what they involve?
Don’t worry! This is why we’ve compiled this short guide on the most popular intimate waxing procedures and some basic dos and don’ts. Whether you prefer to have your pubic hair more au natural or you want a landing strip (note: this is not just for airport runways), read on.
What Is A Classic Bikini Wax?
As far as intimate waxing is concerned, the classic bikini wax is the tamest.
This style is for you if you’re interested in exclusively targeting any area that is visible from your swimsuit or underwear. It is also ideal if you want just a trim around the edges.
The classic bikini wax for women keeps things a little more natural. With this waxing style, you can remove pubic hair up to a width of four fingers from the bikini line area and two from the top. Any hair that sticks out under the modest knicker line (think M&S) is removed.
If you want more hair removed, you can take it one step further with the full bikini wax. This cuts deeper into the bikini line and removes more hair. In some cases, this procedure may sometimes involve removing all frontal pubic hair. However, it does not remove hair around the anus like its more daring sisters – the Brazilian and the Hollywood!
If you are an intimate waxing virgin, the classic bikini wax is the perfect option.
What Is A Brazilian Bikini Wax?
When it comes to pubic grooming and intimate waxing, Brazilian waxes are one of the most popular options.
While the classic bikini wax removes pubic hair that grows along the bikini line edge and upper thigh area, the Brazilian wax takes things further. This waxing method not only tidies things up, but also removes hair from your more intimate areas (the external genitals, the upper and inner thighs, and the anus).
When it comes to Brazilian waxes, you also have a choice of shape – the two most popular being a landing strip or a triangle.
Not surprisingly, this intimate waxing style grows in popularity come summer when skimpy bikinis make an appearance. The Brazilian isn’t just for Brazilians – it’s perfect if you want to feel smooth and hairless. It’s also ideal if you have particular underwear or bikini bottoms you want to wear.
What Is A Hollywood Wax?
The Hollywood wax is the most ‘complete’. This intimate waxing style involves your esthetician removing all visible pubic hair, from your front, between your upper legs, around your labia, and between the buttocks. It is the most popular type of intimate wax procedure in Hollywood, hence its moniker.
Intimate Waxing Prep
In terms of preparation when it comes to intimate waxing, there isn’t much you need to do. The most important thing is the length of your pubic hair. Make sure you grow it out a bit to a quarter of an inch. When your pubic hair is this length, it allows for the wax of the intimate area to properly stick to the hair.
Another way you can prepare for your intimate wax is by prepping the pubic region. Taking a warm bath and exfoliating the skin the night before helps soften the skin and helps get rid of any unwanted dead skin cells that are likely to clog your pores. Doing this will help prevent those unsightly and painful ingrown hairs.
Intimate Waxing – What To Expect?
We understand that most people, especially newbies, have anxieties and insecurities when going for an intimate waxing session. You need to know what to expect before you walk into your beauty therapist’s room and whip your underwear off.
A bikini waxing appointment can take as little as 20 minutes and up to 40 minutes depending on which style you go for.
First, you will need to undress from the waist down, so be sure to wear something suitable. Once you undress, you will get onto the table.
After you have determined what type of bikini wax you prefer, your beauty therapist will clean the pubic area and prep it with either oil or powder. For your intimate waxing prepping purposes, we highly recommend our Harley Wax Cleanser & Toner. It acts in two stages. In the first stage, our prepping wax cleanser emulsifies and removes dirt and oil embedded in the skin. The second stage involves re-balancing the skin’s PH levels and tightening the skin and pores to remove any oil and lotion. Using such products will maximise your waxing experience and results.
Harley Wax continuously searches for new innovations to ease the intimate waxing experience – we are always one step ahead. Because pre-waxing care is just as important as your intimate waxing post-care, we developed Harley Pre-Waxing Oil. This oil shrink wraps itself to the hair and not the skin, making it an essential product in Hot and Film Wax treatments.
Your beauty therapist will then apply hot wax to a section. After it cools, they will pull your skin taut and remove the wax quickly. They will continue this step until they can remove all the hair.
We highly recommend our Harley Rose Hot Wax or Azulene Film Wax for all your intimate waxing needs. Both products contain Titanium Dioxide, a natural ingredient in many professional new generation waxes. Intimate waxing products with Titanium Dioxide are soft, velvety, and very pliable, making them perfect for sensitive skin and all your bikini waxing needs.
After the intimate waxing procedure is over, your therapist will then remove any stray hairs with a pair of tweezers.
The final step involves your beautician applying either soothing lotion or serum to the waxed area to reduce irritation and prevent ingrown hairs.
Containing natural ingredients with soothing agents like lavender, our Harley After Wax Oil helps calm the skin, and reduce skin irritation, redness, and ingrown hairs. Because Aloe Vera has several essential skin healing properties it’s also perfect post intimate waxing. Our Aloe Vera Soothing Gel will also suit all your post-wax needs.
Intimate Waxing Aftercare
Now that you have a tidy pubic area, there are a few after-wax care tips you should adhere to to ensure your skin remains smooth and bump-free.
Avoid Water
After any kind of intimate waxing, the skin is vulnerable to infection. This is why most beauticians suggest avoiding water, especially swimming pools, for at least 24 hours. Taking a shower is OK after your bikini wax.
Do Not Touch
You probably want to check out how smooth and nice your skin feels. Don’t do this – keep your hands to yourself. Wait at least a day until you touch as your fingers may introduce unwanted bacteria to the area.
Relax
If you are the active type, use the next two days to take some RnR. After any kind of intimate waxing, your skin is more sensitive and vulnerable to bacteria. Therefore, it is a good idea to avoid any friction, heat, or sweat. This includes working out, tanning, and having sex
Avoid sunbathing for at least 48 hours pre and post-wax. So, if you’d planned your intimate waxing around a sunny getaway, keep this in mind.
Wear Loose Clothing
Keep it loose and avoid wearing anything too tight for one to two days post-wax. Wearing loose clothing after a professional bikini wax expediates healing as there is less friction, bacteria buildup, and sweat.
Soothe Intimate Waxing Irritation
Do you have sensitive skin? Are you prone to breakouts and/or ingrown hairs? We have the perfect intimate waxing product for you. Harley Waxing Ingrown Hair Solution contains high-quality ingredients that soothe inflamed skin. It’s also excellent in reducing the build-up of dead skin cells that often block pores, resulting in painful and unsightly ingrown hairs. Avoid oily products and look out for lotions or gels with natural soothing agents such as menthol, arnica, and eucalyptus.
Exfoliate
If you do not exfoliate your pubic region, now is the time. Like any place that grows hair on your body, there is always a risk of developing ingrown hairs. To prevent any uncomfortable irritation, wait two days after your intimate waxing session to exfoliate. Using a high-quality exfoliant, gently scrub the waxed area.
